Dafydd here, drummer for Secret Shows.
I have been wanting to blog for some time now, but never had time just to sit down and write. I used to blog regularly for my old band, and as this new band has progressed, now seems as good a time as any to blog again.
A bit about Secret Shows:
Chris and I began jamming at the Hope & Anchor in Denbigh three years ago, under the name ‘Audiogasm’ (Sorry Buk) until eventually we decided to push the band on and look for a bassist.
That was in May, 2012, and so far its been a great year for the band, with gigs spread throughout North Wales and the North West.
Our music has changed somewhat since the birth of the band; going from a self-indulgent instrumental jazz fusion duo with no vocal melodies or basslines, to a primarily rock and funk based trio with lead and backing vocals and of course bass, has taken some getting used to. All of our songs had to be re-written to fit our new style, a challenge we gladly accepted.
Once we converted the old songs to new our new style, writing became a different process. Whilst Chris and I still write the bones of the song, it becomes a fully collaborative effort when Cat steps in with bass. Lyrics and melody lines are written by all three members. We’re proud of the result – as of this writing, we count 12 original tracks in our gigging arsenal.
Now you know more about us, let’s talk about something else!
Some of you may know that we independently released a 3 track EP called ‘Extended Play Pt.1’ at the beginning of April. I’m not going to lie: it took SO long to do, that it was becoming borderline ridiculous! Whilst I contributed with a few bits of engineering and production, Chris did the bulk of the mixing and mastering, and personally I think he did a great job of it. But the process of recording took a long time, and so did the mixing – we didn’t have a deadline, and so we took our time and tried to perfect everything. That was our downfall: too much time.
We put so much much pressure on ourselves to get things perfect; what we originally intended to be a demo EP turned into the desire for a professional, self-produced record. I felt sorry for Chris for the amount of hours he put into it!
What started as a 5 track EP was narrowed down to 3, so the idea is to release a “part 2” of the EP sometime in the near future. Look out for that!
This year, I’ve told myself that I’m going to make more of an effort and go to more gigs – well, last night Secret Shows made a trip to see Minus the Bear at the Kazimier in Liverpool.
The venue was quite frankly incredible – so much character and an awesome sound. And whilst Minus The Bear were great, as was to be expected, they were outmatched in this case by their support acts, The Collectors Club and Vasco Da Gama. Really worth checking these guys out – really nice people too.
And with that, I’m off.
See you soon!
Next gig (so far): Brighton Fringe Festival, 23rd of May.
